Dupont Circle is an exclusive neighborhood in Washington, D.C., that became, after the Civil War, the center of high society in the nation's capital. Hansen traces this development from its beginnings in the 18th century into the early 20th century. The narrative focuses on highlights and scandals from the lives of the famous and wealthy people who lived or circulated in the Dupont Circle area. The denizens and regular visitors included Presidents and members of Congress, diplomats both American and foreign, Alexander Graham Bell, the DuPonts, Mark Twain, and some members of the Hearst family, among many others.
