A heartwarming exploration of the life and career of American singer Jan DeGaetani, highlighting her groundbreaking performances, her profound influence on contemporary composers, and her innovative, practical teaching philosophies. Jan DeGaetani-renowned singer, visionary teacher, and transformative force in contemporary music-reshaped the possibilities of the human voice and left an indelible mark on the works of George Crumb, Jacob Druckman, Peter Maxwell Davies, and other major composers in the United States and beyond. Celebrated for her groundbreaking performances and recordings, her legacy endures most powerfully through her teaching and the generations of artists she inspired. She had intended to write a book to share her philosophies and offer guidance to her students, but her life was cut tragically short before she could complete it. This volume brings that vision to life. Drawn from the DeGaetani archives and enriched by the generous contributions of composers, students, and colleagues, it weaves together her personal reflections, interviews, and archival materials to tell the story of how a girl from Ohio transformed what composers believed was possible. More than a biography, it is a tribute to a fearless singer, pioneering artist, devoted teacher, and generous colleague-an enduring testament to the voice as an instrument of limitless possibility.
