Universities are granting ever more PhDs in biomedical fields, but the number of tenured teaching and academic research positions--traditional destinations for PhD students--is not growing at the same rate, so PhD students will increasingly need to find work elsewhere. It is in this context that scientists working outside large universities describe their jobs and their work. The topics include a small liberal arts college, the National Institutes of Health, working for a scientific society, life scientists in management consulting, and science journalism and writing.
