In 1898 Wilhelm Raabe proclaimed his historical narrative Hastenbeck to be the "companion piece" to his 1888 novel Odfeld : "In the wake of the Iliad from the Duchy of Braunschweig comes the Odyssey from the Duchy of Braunschweig."
