§06§The German Linguistic Studies Series is a comprehensive and outstanding forum in its field. It has borne the name of its subject in its title since the foundation of the series in the eighth decade of the last century.§The series is comprehensive in the broad spectrum of topics covered (language levels, varieties, communication forms, epochs) in the range of research perspectives (theoretical and empirical studies, fundamental research and applications, interdisciplinarity with psychology, the social sciences etc.) and methodologies (the sole criterion is quality), in the rhythm of research (trends are perceived and also set, achievements are secured) and in the forms of presentation (monographs, textbooks, collected volumes, dictionaries).§Professorial theses, outstanding doctoral theses, pioneering research findings from wider contexts, but also the surprising stroke of genius' set the standards for inclusion in the series.§§ §15§Die vorliegende Arbeit hat sich zum Ziel gesetzt, die Frage zu beantworten, welche Prozesse und Triebkräfte dazu geführt haben, daß aus der Schweiz des Jahres 1700, in der Lesende und Schreibende zu einer Minderheit (5 bis 25 Prozent der Bevölkerung) gehörten, im Laufe von 200 Jahren eine vollständig alphabetisierte Nation wurde. Die Untersuchung gliedert sich in drei Teile: im ersten Teil werden die Durchsetzung der literalen Norm (alle erwachsenen Personen müssen lesen und schreiben können), im zweiten Teil die realen Lesepraktiken wie lautes und stummes Lesen, Vorlesen und Lesen für sich selber und im dritten Teil die vielfältigen Schreibpraktiken, die vom Chronik-, Journal- und Tagebuchschreiben bis zum Briefeschreiben und zur Buchhaltung reichen, untersucht. Durch diese Dreigliederung konnte genauer unterschieden werden zwischen Erwartungen, Projektionen, propagandistischen Behauptungen und ideologischen Überformungen in Bezug auf die schriftliche Kommunikation und die Schrif §15§tmedien einerseits und den realen Lesepraktiken und Schreibpraktiken andererseits, was darüber hinaus in die Lage versetzt, ihre gegenseitige Abhängigkeit und Beeinflussung bestimmen zu können. §07§The German Linguistic Studies Series is a comprehensive and outstanding forum in its field. Er habilitierte sich 2000 und ist Titularporfessor am Institut für Populäre Kulturen der Universität Zürich.
