１９８０年前半、木造建築の良さ、建築資材としての可能性が世界的に提唱されるようになり、多くの大規模木造建築が建設されるようになった。１９９３年６月、木造建築にかかわる建築基準法の一部が改正され、要求される性能が満たされれば、準耐火建築物として位置づけられるようになった。ＲＣ造、Ｓ造に比べ今なお多くの制約を受けるものの木造建築の可能性は拡大した。こうした背景を反映し、本書は従来の図集という枠から一歩踏み出し、資材、構造そして耐火にかかわる問題についても紹介した。
