本書は、集合論をこれから学ぼうという人が、別段の予備知識なしに読むことができるような、集合論の解説書というつもりで、筆をとった。通常、集合論の書物には、単なる集合と、順序集合あたりを扱っているものと、いわゆる点集合論（ユークリッド空間などの点集合）に重きをおくものとがある。集合に「順序」を導入したものが順序集合であるように、位相空間も、単に集合に「位相」を導入しただけのものであり、集合論的色彩が濃いという理由から、本書には、位相空間の章をもうけた。扱いとしては、基礎的事項に限る方針にしたので、いわゆる点集合論的色彩はもたないようになっている。
