昭和６１年土木学会制定のコンクリート標準示方書は、我が国で初めて「限界状態設計法」を全面的に採用した画期的なものである。本書では、この新しいコンクリート標準示方書に従って設計するための基礎が学べることを第一の目的とすると同時に、コンクリート構造の力学特性の基本を理解できるように配慮した。また、鉄筋コンクリート工学の分野で学ぶべき事項を整理し、本文には土木工学科の学生にとって必要最小限の事項を挙げるにとどめた。三訂版では、平成８年に一部改正されたコンクリート標準示方書に対応して訂正を行うと共に、ＳＩ単位に統一した。
