The letters of Apollonius of Tyana generally appear either in anthologies of Greek epistolographers or as an appendix to Philostatus' Vita Apollonii, says Penella, but are rarely presented or studied in their own right. He presents them in the original Greek with facing pages of English translation followed by extensive commentary. His introductory material covers knowledge of the letters in Late Antiquity; the separately transmitted collection: the manuscripts, the order of the letters, and headings and closings; printed editions; and the question of authenticity. He has incorporated most of the substance of his 1971 doctoral dissertation at Harvard into this study, he says, but in a much revised form.
